Why it's worth checking out

Zazu Dining & Bar is a Modern Australian restaurant in West End, Brisbane, bringing European touches and a broad, share-friendly menu to 49 Mollison Street. The offering is designed for lingering over a mix of smaller and larger plates, with cocktails, mini cocktails, international wines and a substantial drinks list alongside lunch and dinner service.

The food ranges widely without losing its contemporary focus. Early plates include tuna ceviche, premium tuna and salmon sashimi with a Japanese-Peruvian sauce, beef carpaccio, stracciatella, pan-fried prawns and crispy calamari. For something more substantial, the menu covers barramundi, flame-finished Atlantic salmon, tuna steak, Queensland grass-fed eye fillet, grain-fed steaks and a slow-cooked USA-style half rack. The steak, seafood and rib selections come with complimentary sides, while additional options include Mediterranean Shopska salad, Caesar salad and roasted cauliflower and broccoli.

Several dishes give the menu a distinct point of difference. The Crab Lasagne, available as an entrée or main, combines sand crab with abalone cream, parmesan and black caviar, while the mushroom lasagne offers a vegetarian choice with wild mushroom, thyme and truffle sauce. Other filling options include Zazu’s wagyu beef schnitzel, roast chicken with Puy lentils and fondant potato, a wagyu cheeseburger with fries, and a vegan special that changes daily. For sharing, there is a slow-cooked 1kg lamb shoulder, a carved tomahawk steak and a half-metre Angus eye fillet brochette.

The setting is described as cosy, intimate and moody, with both indoor and alfresco seating. That makes Zazu suitable for a date or a relaxed dinner with friends, particularly if you enjoy ordering several dishes for the table. The bar also gives solo diners and drinks-focused visits a natural option, with martinis, margaritas, Old Fashioneds, Negronis, sours, spritzes, beer, spirits and non-alcoholic cocktails. Finish with chocolate fondant, crème brûlée, or crêpes Suzette for two.
