Horizon of Khufu Brisbane: An Immersive VR Expedition to Ancient Egypt

Horizon of Khufu is an indoor virtual reality expedition that takes visitors back around 4,500 years to ancient Egypt. Based at Fever Pavilion on level 1 of 123 Gotha St in Fortitude Valley, the experience centres on the Great Pyramid of Giza and the world of Pharaoh Khufu. Rather than viewing a static exhibition, guests wear a VR headset and move through a shared digital space, exploring the pyramid and learning about Egyptian culture, architecture and funeral rites.

The expedition runs for about 45 minutes, with roughly an hour recommended overall for equipment collection and storing personal belongings. It is designed as an active experience: visitors wander through the space rather than sit, while on-site attendants are available throughout and a virtual guide supports the journey. The venue is indoors with controlled air temperature, and groups of four can take part together, with multiple groups able to follow the expedition at the same time.

The project has been developed with a strong emphasis on historical accuracy. Its creators worked with Peter Der Manuelian, Professor of Egyptology, and the team behind Harvard University’s Giza Project, drawing on field research and collected data. That gives the experience a clear educational focus alongside its technology, with scientific, cultural and ethnological references woven into the virtual exploration.

It suits families with children aged 10 and over, school groups, corporate team-building outings and celebrations such as birthdays or hens and bucks events. Children aged 10 and 11 must be accompanied during the experience, while older minors still need a parent or guardian at the venue for sign-in requirements. Visitors should be comfortable standing and walking for the session; the experience may not suit people prone to motion sickness, vertigo or claustrophobia, and people with epilepsy, pacemakers or heart conditions cannot participate. The venue is wheelchair accessible, with adapted equipment and assistance available. Public transport is practical, with Fortitude Valley Train Station about 300 metres away.
