Mount Coot-Tha Summit Lookout

Mount Coot-Tha Summit Lookout is a straightforward way to see Brisbane from above, with broad views across the city and out towards Moreton Bay. The heritage-listed lookout sits at the summit of Mt Coot-Tha Reserve, Brisbane’s largest natural area, and is about a 15-minute drive from the CBD. Its viewing platform makes the most of the elevation, whether you visit during the day or in the evening.

There is more here than a quick photo stop. The summit has a café and gift shop, so visitors can pause for a drink or pick up a souvenir while taking in the outlook. The lookout is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and free parking is available via Sir Samuel Griffith Drive. You can also reach the summit by bike or on foot, with access via the Summit Track or Mahogany Track.

For walkers, the reserve offers more than 70 tracks and trails through Mt Coot-Tha Forest. The Summit Track is a relatively easy 1.9-kilometre walk each way from the J.C. Slaughter Falls Picnic Area, with views of Brisbane along the route. The Mahogany Trail provides another route from J.C. Slaughter Falls, while the Spotted Gum Trail climbs from the Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-Tha and includes 250 concrete steps. Trail choices range from short walks to longer connections and circuits, with the council’s track maps providing distances and gradings.

The surrounding precinct suits a broad day out for families, groups and solo visitors. There are nine picnic areas across the reserve, with some offering tables, barbecues, accessible toilets, water taps and car parks. At the mountain’s base, the 56-hectare Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-Tha includes more than 200,000 plants from around the world, along with guided walks, nature-themed workshops and event spaces. The reserve can be explored on foot, by bike or on designated shared-use horse tracks, while dogs must remain on leads. The summit’s story is also part of its appeal: where the peak once had only one eucalyptus tree, it now provides one of Brisbane’s best-known elevated viewpoints.
