Witton Barracks Park

Witton Barracks Park is a historic World War II site in Indooroopilly, Brisbane, now being developed as a community and social enterprise hub. The site welcomes locals and visitors to attend events, connect with community organisations, explore its history and take part in activities held across the grounds. It is also available for venue hire, with spaces suited to celebrations, community meetings, workshops, offices and creative work.

The setting combines open areas with heritage buildings and a strong sense of place beside the Brisbane River. Several features provide a direct link to the site’s wartime past, including three surviving brick cell blocks that formed part of the World War II interrogation centre. Visitors can see preserved cell doors, barred windows and original locking mechanisms, as well as the former prisoner-of-war exercise yard, which is now an open space between the buildings. The later Motor Transport Cover, built around 1959–60, is another notable structure on the site.

Witton Barracks has a substantial military and intelligence history. From 1942 to 1945, it was the headquarters of the Allied Translator and Interpreter Section, which worked on significant Japanese intelligence material during the Pacific war. The site later served as Australian Women’s Army Service barracks, a personnel depot and Queensland military police barracks before being acquired by Brisbane City Council in 2016. In 2024, White Box Enterprises began managing the site under a community lease, with a focus on employment, connection, creativity and social enterprise.

There is a changing programme of activities, including history talks, community events, self-defence classes and the Sunrise Markets, held on the first and third Sunday of each month according to the website. Tours are also available through the Brisbane Greeters’ Walter Taylor Bridge tour, while Brisbane History Group hosts talks about Witton Barracks. With its mix of open space, events and preserved wartime structures, the site suits history-minded visitors, community groups, workshop organisers and anyone looking for a different way to spend time in Brisbane’s inner west. It is also a practical option for people seeking a venue with a strong local story rather than a conventional function space.
