Vera Street Community Garden

Vera Street Community Garden is a grassroots community garden in Toowong, Brisbane, where local and not-so-local residents come together for organic gardening and creek rehabilitation. The garden sits within the grounds of Toowong Science, Mathematics and Technology Academy, off Vera Street in West Toowong, alongside Toowong Creek.

The group’s regular Sunday working bees are open to people who want to learn about growing organic food, meet others or simply spend time outdoors. Previous gardening experience is not required, and the garden welcomes people of different ages, backgrounds and skill levels. Its garden beds are maintained for shared consumption, giving the project a practical focus as well as a social one.

Vera Street Community Garden was formed in 2005 and has grown into an incorporated association focused on sustainable community gardening and environmental care. Alongside tending the beds, members help with habitat protection and rehabilitation work at Toowong Creek. There are also ways to contribute through garden artwork, funding applications and other activities involved in running the group.

This is a good fit for solo visitors, neighbours, school and community groups, and anyone interested in gardening, bush regeneration or making local connections. The garden’s emphasis on inter-generational and inter-cultural relationships makes it a welcoming place to get involved, whether you have established gardening skills or are starting from scratch.
