Why it's worth checking out
The Rose & Crown brings a London-style gastropub to South Bank, Brisbane, with a focus on homemade food, traditional British pub drinks and an informal atmosphere. Its menu is deliberately small and changes with the seasons, using locally sourced ingredients. The venue also offers hand-pulled traditional ale served directly from the cask, along with tap beers including Birra Moretti, BrewDog, Magners and Guinness, plus a broad wine list featuring Australian and international bottles.
British pub classics are central to the experience. Sunday roasts come with Yorkshire puddings, gravy and the usual trimmings, while the steak and Guinness pie is highlighted as one of the house signatures. The main bar also serves an authentic Scotch egg, making it an easy option for a drink and something substantial to eat rather than a full sit-down meal. Upstairs, the Long Room bar offers cocktails, wine, Guinness and the full food menu in a more intimate setting.
There are several spaces to choose from, depending on the occasion. The English-styled dining room has timber floors, panelling, wooden tables and mismatched chairs, while the elevated undercover balcony wraps around the old Queenslander building. The beer garden sits above the traffic and combines greenery with an olive tree and fairy lights. The main bar suits an after-work drink or pre-dinner gathering, and the range of areas also makes the pub suitable for group bookings and functions.
The venue is family-owned and operated by the Derricks. Alex, a Queenslander, spent more than two decades working in the gastropub scene across London, southern England and Wales before opening the Rose & Crown with his British wife, Bella, an interior stylist. Together, they have shaped the heritage-listed Queenslander into a pub designed to feel like a local: relaxed, sociable and comfortable without being overly formal. Alongside meals and drinks, the venue runs Sunday roasts, Wednesday pub trivia and other events, with function spaces available for larger gatherings.
