Why it's worth checking out
The Nest Creative Space is a multi-purpose home for artists, makers and innovators in West End, Brisbane. Established in 2013 by Missy Gilbert and Daniel Bourne, it was created as an inclusive space for creative expression, development and connection. The studio environment follows an open-plan approach, encouraging collaboration rather than keeping creative work behind closed doors.
The Nest Gallery is designed for exhibitions, cultural activity and events, with 113 square metres of hanging wall space, natural light, white floors and walls, high ceilings and adaptable lighting. It can accommodate up to 80 people and can open into The Greenhouse, a larger event and workshop area with an indoor botanical garden, lounge nooks, kitchen and bar. The Greenhouse has capacity for up to 100 people and includes presentation and sound equipment, making it suitable for workshops, gatherings and creative events.
For working creatives, the Meanjin/Brisbane artist studio space offers 24-hour access, Wi-Fi, secure entry, natural light, high ceilings and a flexible layout. Studio users also have access to a professional photography studio and accessories, workshop areas and the gallery space. The Nest LAB adds a dedicated photo and video studio with a 4.8-metre-wide by five-metre-high white cyclorama, fitting room, hair and make-up area, furniture, plinths and street-level loading access.
The venue’s character comes from its carefully collected furniture, wares and commissioned artworks, along with Missy’s botanical styling. The founders say the space was built using up-cycled and reclaimed materials, giving it a considered, personal feel. There is also a private space for natural therapies and holistic practice. The Nest suits artists seeking a studio or exhibition setting, photographers and filmmakers needing a functional production space, and groups planning workshops or creative events. Wheelchair-friendly facilities are available across the listed spaces, with parking and public transport access noted for the Brisbane location.
