Why it's worth checking out
Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) is part of the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) precinct in South Bank, Brisbane. GOMA and the Queensland Art Gallery sit about 150 metres apart within the Queensland Cultural Centre, on the banks of the Maiwar River. The two architecturally acclaimed galleries offer a substantial art visit, whether you have half an hour to explore one site or several hours to move between both.
The programme spans exhibitions, cinema, tours, workshops and other events. At GOMA, the website lists Archie Moore’s *kith and kin*, running from 27 September 2025 to 18 October 2026 with free admission. The gallery also hosts the Australian Cinémathèque, with screenings such as the 1929 film *Queen Kelly*, accompanied by a Wurlitzer Style 260 Opus 2040 pipe organ. A future exhibition, *Make, Believe, Magic: The Worlds of The Jim Henson Company*, is scheduled to open on 12 September 2026.
There is plenty to explore beyond the main exhibition rooms. QAGOMA suggests sculpture walks around both galleries, while its programme includes First Nations art tours, art and yoga sessions, family workshops and other events. The wider QAG displays *Great and Small: Kindred Creatures in Indigenous Australian Art*, and features Keith Wikmunea’s *Theewith Yot. A! | Lots of White Cockatoo* in the foyer. These listings reflect a programme that connects contemporary art, Indigenous Australian art, film, architecture and accessible public activities.
GOMA suits a broad range of visitors: solo visitors wanting to browse at their own pace, couples and groups planning a cultural outing, and families looking for creative activities. Entry to the galleries is free, although some exhibitions and events require tickets or bookings. The galleries are open daily from 10am to 5pm, with a noon opening on Anzac Day, and are closed on Good Friday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Located in South Brisbane, GOMA is also positioned for a longer visit that takes in both gallery buildings and the riverside setting.
