Why it's worth checking out

Studio on Brunswick is a Fortitude Valley creative venue built around artist development, exhibitions and community rather than a conventional gallery model. Its programme brings together creative classes, workshops, mentoring and opportunities for independent and emerging artists to develop their practice, build their profile and create more sustainable art careers. Collectors can also explore original work by emerging artists through the venue’s gallery spaces and Emergent Online Gallery, which features sculpture, ceramics and wall art.

The venue has two distinct spaces. Its upstairs studio is based in the heritage Carroll Building and is described as a warm, professional creative oasis for making, learning and sharing work. The second space, Emergent Gallery, is a boutique-style exhibition venue at the top end of California Lane in Fortitude Valley. At 24 square metres, it is suited to solo shows, small group exhibitions, collective shows and curated creative events, with capacity for around 20 to 30 people and the option for activity to extend into the laneway.

Emergent Gallery is fitted out for exhibitions, with a track hanging system, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a sink, small fridge, desk, chair and shelving. Plinths, planks and desk easels are available as optional inclusions, and the space also has wheelchair access, bathroom access and a location close to public transport. Its California Lane setting places it near cafés, restaurants, boutique bars, shops, Glitter Records and Tell Me How It Ends Bookstore, making it a practical option for a small creative event in the Valley.

Studio on Brunswick began when founder and artist Lyne Tilt was looking for a space that combined warmth, professionalism and support for independent artists. What started as a private studio and intimate workshop space has grown into a creative ecosystem that has worked with more than 1,000 artists, according to the venue. It will appeal most to artists seeking classes, mentoring, exhibition opportunities or space hire, as well as collectors and visitors interested in discovering original work. Gallery hire begins with an enquiry and phone interview with the director, so prospective exhibitors should contact the studio before planning an event.
