Simpson Falls Picnic Area is a useful base for exploring the bushland of Mt Coot-tha Reserve in Toowong, Brisbane. The reserve covers more than 1,600 hectares and has over 18.5 kilometres of walking tracks ranging from easy to difficult, making this a good option for a short nature outing or a longer walk through the forest.
The Simpson Falls Track is a 650-metre route that takes about 40 minutes and requires moderate fitness. The falls change with the weather: in drier months, visitors may see rock ledges and small trickles, while heavy rain can bring a more substantial waterfall. The track also connects with the Eugenia Circuit and Stringybark Track, allowing walkers to extend their time in the reserve. The Eugenia Circuit passes through eucalypt woodland, vine forest and creeks before linking with tracks to other picnic areas.
It suits solo walkers, couples and families who are comfortable with natural, sometimes uneven terrain. Dogs can be walked in the reserve provided they remain on a lead and waste is disposed of responsibly. Conditions can change after heavy rain, with washouts, ruts and uneven surfaces reported on some tracks, so visitors should take care and check onsite information before setting out. The wider Mt Coot-tha area also includes mountain-bike trails, although riders should use the trail map and choose routes matched to their experience.
