Red Sand Art Gallery

Red Sand Art Gallery is a Paddington, Brisbane gallery focused on Aboriginal and Indigenous art from Central Australia. Its collection includes large, medium and small paintings, with works connected to artists and communities across Anmatyerre, Warlpiri and Utopia Homelands country, as well as Kintore and the wider Central Desert.

The gallery’s background stretches back to 1996, when Red Sand was established at TiTree, north of Alice Springs. It later opened a second gallery in Alice Springs before relocating to Brisbane. Over those years, it developed working relationships with artists from the Northern Territory, including artists associated with Utopia such as Kathleen Petyarre, Greeny Purvis, Ada Bird and Cowboy Louis Pwerle.

The website describes a collection ranging from finely detailed dot paintings, where dotting reflects variations in the terrain, to bold works influenced by Awelye body-paint designs. These paintings relate to Dreaming and Tjukurpa, with connections to songs, ceremony and cultural responsibility. Alongside the paintings, the gallery houses genuine termite-hollowed didgeridoos, boomerangs, artefacts and sculptures, plus bush jewellery, music sticks, Ininti seeds, and gumnut necklaces and bracelets from the Central Desert.
