Kayes Rocks

Kayes Rocks is a small heritage reserve and riverside lookout in Toowong, created as part of a 1930s road-reserve beautification scheme. Its setting on Glenny Street combines local history with views along the Brisbane River and across to Orleigh Park, making it a worthwhile stop for visitors exploring Brisbane’s inner-west suburbs.

The reserve is arranged as five grassed terraces descending a steep slope towards the river. Rough-hewn stone retaining walls, concrete and stone stairs, trimmed hedges, seats and a narrow central path give the site a distinctive civic-works character. A large camphor laurel tree provides one of its most recognisable features, while the terraces form a prominent landmark in the Toowong streetscape and riverscape.

The place began as a rocky bank between Brisbane Street and the water. Plans were prepared by the City Engineer’s Office in 1933, and the work was probably carried out through a Queensland Government unemployment-relief scheme. The reserve is thought to be named after Samuel Kaye, a nearby Toowong resident, music professor and piano and organ importer who was also among the first members of the Toowong Shire Council in 1880.

With its open outlook, seating and informal recreational setting, Kayes Rocks suits a quiet solo visit, a short break during a neighbourhood walk or a low-key stop for visitors interested in Brisbane’s heritage landscape. The site includes several stairways and a steep series of terraces, so it is best approached with care.
