Why it's worth checking out

Common Vice Wine Bar is a relaxed neighbourhood restaurant and wine bar in the heart of New Farm, Brisbane, within a short stroll of the Brisbane River and Brisbane Powerhouse. Its offer is centred on expressive Australian natural wines, cold craft beer and a food menu designed to move between smaller plates, larger dishes and shared boards. The setting and format make it a natural option for a casual meal before or after a visit to the theatre, as well as an easy local gathering place.

The menu combines Modern Australian cooking with European influences. Oysters are shucked to order and served natural, with mignonette or Kilpatrick preparations, while the small plates range from warmed marinated olives and house focaccia with whipped chives and garlic butter to lamb kofta with tzatziki, duck arancini and Mooloolaba king prawns with spicy tomato and crispy chorizo. For a table looking to share, the charcuterie board brings together capocollo, wild venison and gin botanical salami, black truffle squid ink salami, sourdough baguette, lavosh and pickles. There is also a cheese board with Brie, Manchego, Danish Blue, quince paste, pear and lavosh crackers.

Larger plates include mushroom ragu risotto, beef short rib pappardelle, pan-seared Northern Territory barramundi, Spanish-spiced half chicken and Black Angus rib fillet. The sides give groups more flexibility, with options such as potato gratin, wedges, chips, broccolini with green beans and snow peas, and a fennel, radicchio and apple salad. Desserts include warm apple pie with burnt honey mascarpone and vanilla bean ice cream, alongside a chocolate and coconut lamington with coconut mousse, raspberry jelly, mascarpone and rocky road ice cream.

Common Vice suits couples wanting a wine-led dinner, small groups sharing plates, or solo diners who would rather settle in with a glass and something from the smaller-plates menu. Its wine list covers sparkling, white, skin-contact and orange, rosé, red and dessert styles, including Australian natural wine options and selections from further afield. Tuesday’s oyster night and Thursday’s steak night are listed as recurring specials; the website also notes that its Wednesday wine-pairing set menu is currently unavailable.
