Birrunga Gallery

Birrunga Gallery is a First Nations art and cultural hub in Milton, Brisbane, combining a café with a rotating display of contemporary First Nations art. The gallery was founded by Wiradyuri artist Birrunga Wiradyuri and is Indigenous-owned and operated, with a focus on supporting First Nations artists, cultural education and community engagement. The collection and programme bring together painting, music, dance and cultural artefacts, creating a place to spend time with art while learning more about the stories and perspectives behind it.

The Milton café and gallery is described as a warm, welcoming setting with a Native-infused menu, making it suitable for a morning coffee, lunch or a quieter visit surrounded by contemporary artworks. The catering team also prepares modern fusion cuisine using Native ingredients and spices, with catering and event packages available for corporate gatherings and private functions. The venue’s art and food offerings can be combined for events that engage guests with First Nations art, culture and cuisine.

For a more structured visit, Birrunga Gallery offers artist-guided tours, artist talks, storytelling and workshops. Artist talks with Birrunga Wiradyuri or Kane Brunjes include a guided look at selected artworks followed by discussion about the stories, cultural knowledge and lived experiences that inform them. The Importance of Place Workshop, led by Birrunga Wiradyuri, uses storytelling and guided reflection to explore the personal, cultural and historical meaning of place, and includes an Acknowledgment of Country, a didgeridoo painting meditation, a small canvas, tuition and materials.

These experiences are designed for art lovers, cultural learners, individuals, couples, education groups, corporate teams and tour groups. Group bookings are essential for the listed talks and workshops, with packages able to include catering and event services. Birrunga also provides art services such as murals, digital design elements, commissioned artworks, art purchases and art hire, working with Indigenous artists to create pieces aligned with a client’s vision.
