Witton Barracks

Witton Barracks is a distinctive World War II site in Indooroopilly, on the banks of the Brisbane River, now being developed as a community and social enterprise hub. Its purpose combines preserving the site’s history with creating space for connection, creativity, employment and new ideas. Visitors can explore what’s happening on site, attend community events, enquire about venue hire or join activities hosted by partner organisations.

The wartime history is the main draw. In 1942, the property became the headquarters of the Allied Translator and Interpreter Section, a joint intelligence unit that translated captured Japanese documents and helped the Allies understand Japan’s military plans during the Pacific war. It was also Australia’s primary interrogation centre for prisoners of war during 1942–45. Later, the site served as barracks for Australian Women’s Army Service units, a personnel depot and Queensland’s major military police barracks.

Several surviving features make that history tangible. The three brick cell blocks were purpose-built during World War II and retain cell doors, barred windows and original locking mechanisms. Visitors can also look for wire discovered within the walls during recent renovations, walk through the former prisoner-of-war exercise yard and see the 12-bay Motor Transport Cover, built around 1959–60. The buildings arranged around the open parade ground reflect the layout of an Australian Army barracks.
