Idle

Idle is a bakery, café and pantry on Merthyr Road in New Farm, Brisbane, and the next chapter of the Agnes Bakery story. It keeps the focus on handmade baking while adding an all-day dine-in menu and shelves of provisions for taking home. The venue is open daily, with walk-ins welcome, and supports dining in, takeaway, pre-orders and catering.

The bakery offering includes slow-fermented sourdough loaves, hand-shaped sweet and savoury pastries, seasonal cakes and daily sandwiches. Familiar options include traditional croissants, pain au chocolat, kouign amann, almond florentines, seasonal fruit danishes, Basque cheesecake and sourdough doughnuts. The savoury selection changes regularly and includes items such as beef and mushroom pie, lamb and harissa sausage rolls, ham and Gruyère croissants, baguettes and gluten-free pumpkin products. The website notes that the menu is a sample and can change from day to day.

For a longer visit, Idle’s all-day menu ranges from toast, eggs and granola to more substantial plates such as Baghdad eggs, a Continental Breakfast, mushroom toast, burgers and sandwiches. Sourdough crumpets with crème fraîche and berry compote are a notable bakery-to-table choice, while the pantry is stocked with house-made condiments, pantry staples, small-batch spirits and bottles from the Anyday cellar. The venue also offers whole cakes and bread and pastry pre-orders.

Idle occupies a striking, light-filled corner space designed to combine the warmth of a neighbourhood bakery with a short-order kitchen and well-stocked pantry. It suits a quick coffee and pastry, a relaxed breakfast, a solo stop, or a casual meal with friends and family. For larger occasions, the team also handles event and party catering. Idle is part of Anyday, a Brisbane-based collective founded in 2014 by Tyron Simon, Bianca Marchi, Ben Williamson and Frank Li, whose group includes restaurants, bars and bakeries across the city.
