Queensland Museum with kids: free entry or a SparkLab ticket?
Choose between a flexible free museum visit and a paid SparkLab science session, with age guidance, booking advice, sensory considerations and family facilities.

A family visit to Queensland Museum Kurilpa does not automatically need a SparkLab booking. Museum entry is free; SparkLab, some exhibitions and events are paid separately. Decide which sort of outing you want before buying tickets: a flexible museum visit, or a session built around hands-on science.
The museum is at the corner of Grey and Melbourne Streets in South Brisbane. The museum lists usual opening hours of 9:30am–5pm; SparkLab lists 9:30am–4pm. Do not assume a late museum arrival leaves time for SparkLab. Check the museum’s visit information for holiday exceptions and the SparkLab page for your intended session.
Choose the free museum visit if flexibility matters most
If you are unsure how long your children will want to stay, start with the museum rather than promising a paid session. This keeps the plan adjustable: choose an exhibition that interests them, take a break, and decide whether to continue. Free general entry does not mean every exhibition inside is free, so check any separately ticketed attraction before joining its queue.
You do not need to turn the visit into a lesson. Ask each child to choose something they want to look at, then let that choice shape the next stop. For a little structure, the museum’s family page offers a downloadable First Nations Stories activity trail designed for ages 5–12. It is an option, not a checklist the family has to finish.
Choose SparkLab when the science activities are the main event
SparkLab is a separate, paid exhibition on Level 1, recommended by the museum for ages 6–13. That recommendation is not an entry restriction: the official ticket list also includes younger children. For a mixed-age family, consider whether the younger children will enjoy the same activity rather than assuming one ticketed experience suits everyone equally.
The exhibition includes interactive exhibits, a Maker Space and live experiments at the Science Bar. Maker Space and Science Bar activities are included in the SparkLab ticket; Science Bar programs change daily, with times shown inside. Choose it for those kinds of activities, not a promise that a particular demonstration will happen at the moment you arrive.
Book ahead if SparkLab is essential to the day. The museum limits visitor numbers and recommends online booking, especially during school holidays. Its published session starts are not a guarantee of remaining availability, and they do not establish how long your family can stay. Check the actual booking conditions before paying.
Plan for sound and light, not just the weather
An indoor activity is not necessarily a quiet one. SparkLab’s accessibility information identifies noise, low light and light projections. It also lists sensory-friendly sessions with reduced sound and visitor numbers; check the dated event listing rather than assuming these conditions apply to an ordinary session.
The Tesla Coil demonstration can be loud and includes bright effects. The museum asks visitors with pacemakers or sensitivity to flashing lights or lightning effects to speak to staff. Read the official information before booking if those considerations affect your group.
Sort the practical details before setting out
The museum’s family information says children aged 12 and under must remain with a carer or guardian. It lists pram and stroller access, lifts to all levels, a Family Room on Level 2, and change tables in the Level 1 toilets and inside SparkLab. These are useful details for choosing where to pause, rather than trying to cover every floor without a break.
South Brisbane railway station and the Cultural Centre busway station are within walking distance. If driving, check the museum’s transport and parking page: free general museum admission does not include parking. The museum currently lists P2 entry via the Stanley Place tunnel and exit via Grey Street, so do not assume you will drive out the way you came in.
For a flexible outing, start with the free museum. For children keen on interactive science, make SparkLab the booked part of the day and leave the rest optional. Neither choice needs to become a packed itinerary.
